AUGUST 2006

AUGUST 30--With the anniversary of Katrina, blanket requests have stepped up. We're still piecing blankets together. Remember they bring many people hope. By next week, we will have sent 100 blankets!

AUGUST 17--I am back; click here for pictures and some comments on the trip. Also, yes, the project continues.

AUGUST 3--We leave tomorrow for New Orleans with thirty-five blankets to donate to the Catholic Charities Shelter in New Orleans. That means we have over 1200 squares contributed by people across the country traveling with us; believe me when we say to all of you who helped--Yvonne from New Mexico, Sherry from Minnesota, Julia, Nan and Marge from Michigan, Nancy and the Brewster Place Knitting Club from Topeka, Canyon Villas Knitting Group from San Diego, Jeanne from Bakersfield, CA, Carmel from New Jersey, Anita from New York, and so many others, your work is appreciated and needed. Below is a picture of my dining room table last night!

Special "thank you's" go to Carroll and Ruth, my helpers in Michigan who have been crocheting together blankets in 100 degree heat; also to my cousin for managing to design and print out tags for all the blankets and mail yet more squares despite five days without power in St. Louis, Missouri! She made the remark that she had a small glimpse of what people in the Gulf States suffered and endured during the power outage, but at least all she lost was her perishable food. She still had her home, loved ones and all the momentos which make a house a home. I suppose most of you have seen the weather reports; need I say that my husband's name is Chris, and his birthday is Monday! If we reach New Orleans and have to turn around, we will find homes for the blankets. We promise to take pictures, keep a journal and will post it upon our return. We also promise to help the New Orleans economy; I am thinking grilled oysters, a long, cold drink, a bit of jazz and blues and more grilled oysters followed by another long, cold drink! I am taking a few books to read and a Christmas stocking to knit. Enjoy your week; I will return to a garden filled with cucumbers to pickle, tomatoes to can and cabbage to make into sauerkraut.
